I posted a review of Lucky Starr and the Pirates of the Asteroids. Same goes for this book. For the time, and the condition of the world, it beat the competition in every way. Easy to insult an author who was writing for a specific audience, particularly when you ignore the state-of-understanding of the universe at the time. Read Heinleins ROCKET SHIP GALILEO to see how far off the mark his work was at the same time. Had to be, in a world that had no problem with the construction and use of atomic powered submarines but huddled in terror at the thought of atomic power for space ships.

Though Isaac Asimov, one of the principal forces behind modern science fiction, wrote this book under a pseudonym (Paul French), he eventually tired of the pseudonym and put clues into the later books in the series that should have led most readers to figure out who the actual author was. I will leave a reader to learn those clues for themselves.

In this book, the third in the Lucky Starr series, Lucky and his friend Bigman journey to Venus to learn why Lucky's friend Lou Evans would be accused of corruption. Lou Evans had been sent to Venus to investigate incidents on the planet that suggested someone might be deliberately sabotaging the settlements on Venus. While the incidents were small, they were starting to suggest a possible conspiracy that might involve theft of highly valuable yeast technology from Venus.

As Lucky investigates, he learns a secret about one of the species on Venus. But he, Bigman Jones and Lou Evans encounter the largest life form known to exist in the solar system. Can Lucky, Bigman and Lou survive the encounters with alien life? What is the motivation behind these incidents? Why would Venusian life be dangerous now, when the settlements on Venus have existed for decades? These and other questions will be answered for the intrepid reader!

Isaac Asimov originally wrote the Lucky Starr books in the 1950s. By the time the books were reissued, our knowledge of our solar system had changed dramatically. Many of Asimov's descriptions of Venus have been invalidated by flybys and landings from various space craft as Asimov explains in a forward to the revised books.

Look for this book also collected in a single volume with "David Starr, Space Ranger," and "Lucky Starr and the Pirates of the Asteroids." That book is titled "The Adventures of Lucky Starr." This book is also collected in "The Complete Adventures of Lucky Starr." Other collections may exist.

The Lucky Starr books are a casual read and perfect for readers who enjoyed the Tom Corbett, Space Cadet series of books and Heinlein's juvenile books. There is a lot of logic in each of the books, and just enough hard science fiction to tantalize a reader and hopefully cause the reader to learn more. These books do have a flavor of Asimov's other books, but are less sophisticated. I enjoy these books, but some other readers may find them too mundane. I recommend these books carefully, because I do not know which category of reader you may be. Good luck!

I enjoy Asimov's Lucky Starr series very much, but this novel is definitely my favorite. I particularly love the "Sherlock Holmes meets Space Opera" feel of the series, right down to tall, wiry Starr/Holmes and his beefy, obtuse sidekick Jones/Watson.

The plot of "Oceans of Venus" follows the usual-yet-delightful Lucky Starr mystery format. Something is quite wrong at the lovely underwater station on Venus -- Lucky Starr's friend and fellow councilman has been accused of serious crimes, and the Venusian settlers are behaving very oddly. Can Starr solve this mystery under the sea without being drowned or crushed to death by the ocean's immense pressure?

The details of Venus, though in retrospect wrong, are delightful to see here in Asimov's vivid writing; it's extremely interesting to see how science has marched on and what it has learned in the meantime about Venus' surface and climate. The fictional Venusian ocean is beautiful and exotic, and will draw the reader in instantly with its rich, vibrant life -- it's almost a shame, really, that Asimov's original vision didn't pan out to fit with the facts as we know them now.

I truly love this novel as a wonderful nostalgic treat on a rainy day. If you like scifi and Sherlock Holmes and haven't been introduced to the beauty of Lucky Starr, definitely check this novel out. I only wish it were available in eBook form.

I have loved the Lucky Star Space Ranger stories by Isaac Asimov as a kid and I enjoyed them again as a Senior Citizen. They are a good read for young and old alike. I plan to give these books to my Grandchildren so that they can enjoy them too.
