This book is by far one of the craziest books I've ever read--not so much in subject matter, as in style. Tepper tries to cram way too many genres into one book, which results in a conglomeration of things that don't quite mesh and causes the reader's disbelief. First off, the book is set in a post apocalyptic Earth where men have returned to a pre-industrial way of life, however, some high technology still remains in the form of nuclear robots who roam the Earth as inquisitors for an evil witch. Then you add in archetypal villages (based on Northern European fairy tales), talking animals (based on Native American mythology), gang related violence and sex which leads to an IDDI epidemic due to drug experimentation and loose sexual practices (an obvious reference to AIDS), and then last but not least Man's desire to reach the stars and achieve space travel. As you can see this is way too much information in one book.

Up until this point I've been complaining and I do think Tepper's choice of style does result in some awkward moments but overall she manages to pull it off where many authors would fail miserably. The reason Tepper is able to pull it off is because she writes not just to create an interesting story but to comment on social ills and highlight mankind's flaws.

*****spoiler*******

One thing she did shockingly well is have the main female character, Olly, die. How often does a science fiction/fantasy writer kill off their main character (This is before Martin's Game of Thrones, for those who are curious)? And she doesn't do it just for shock value; she has a message: that this world and the people and animals that inhabit it are worth dying for and if a sacrifice is easy than it's not really a sacrifice.

******spoiler ends*******

She critiques mankind's tendency to destroy and to squander resources on war, rather than trying to think about the future and the possibility of space travel. This book does carry strong feminist and environmental messages, both of which are important. However, this book does not read as condescending and didactic. She manages to incorporate her messages into the story, while still leaving questions unanswered and the reader to draw their own conclusions. I think she is a marvelous fantasy/science fiction writer because she allows the reader to be in a different time and place, all the while writing about problems we currently face.

A Plague of Angels Gollancz Sheri S Tepper 9781857987997 Books Reviews

Great read unique story and very well written
Another page turner!
As always from Tepper, good story. Not her best, meanders quite a bit and gets preachy in a way that her classics never do.
Sheri S. Tepper can tell a story that just won't let you go, and when you do get to the end, you want more. Her characters return to your thoughts for months after you've read one of her books, and she gets her points across without being at all didactic. And by the way, her use of vocabulary is superior!
Read one of Tepper's books and you will be on the way to reading them all.
A Plague of Angels is definitely a well-written, engaging story. The combination of science fiction and fantasy elements is effectively done, and the characters are entertaining even though rarely fully-developed. The book's weaknesses would have been easily forgivable if the premise had been as new to me as it was to some of the other reviewers, but for me, it was not breaking new ground.
In the early '80s, I read two books by James Kahn, "World Enough and Time", and "Time's Dark Laughter". These works similarly follow a post-technological world moving back into the realm of myth and legend, but do so far more effectively. It is possible that the main difference is that my standards have changed over the last 20 years, but I sincerely believe that those earlier works were far better developed than "A Plague of Angels." If you are familiar with Kahn's work, you may be disappointed by this book, but still, it is an enjoyable read.
I love Sherry Tepper. I call her a feminist eco-terrorist, although not because of this book. This is the first of a trilogy about a distant future where climate change and environmental degradation have altered the world and human beings dramatically from now. The waters are rising again and will eventually cover everything. One group is working to genetically alter humans and animals so they can live in the sea. An intriguing plot, interesting characters and beautiful description.
What will Earth be like when man finishes killing everything? Sheri S Tepper has an idea. A Plague of Angels tells us about the survivors and the surviving land a combinatiion of WTF-happened-tales, folk-tales, fairy-tales, and Ms. Tepper's imagination--humor and sadness. Living as we know it, now, does not exist any more.
I really enjoy Ms. Tepper's imagination. Most of her books ring my bell.
I am looking forward to books 2 and 3 (maybe book 4?)
